11th-15th May 2027, Hampton Hill Theatre
Based on the hit film and the incredible true story, Catch Me If You Can, is the high-flying musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Nominated for 4 Tony awards, including Best Musical, this delightfully entertaining show was created by a Tony Award-winning “dream team”, with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a swinging score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).
Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager Frank Abagnale, Jr. runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. But when Frank’s lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Carl pursues Frank across the country to make him pay for his crimes.
Director’s Vision
Catch Me If You Can is a show that dazzles with style while quietly tugging at the heart strings. Our production will celebrate the musical’s fabulous score; from cool Rat Pack inspired swing to smooth ballads and bright 1960s pop, with colourful, energetic company numbers that showcase the full ensemble.
While the narrative focuses on Frank Abagnale Jr. and the two influential men in his life, Detective Hanratty and Frank’s father, the women in their lives are central to understanding the choices these men make. In our production the female roles will be fully realised: strong, resilient, emotionally rich, and never tokenistic. We will be honouring the 1960s through costume, dialogue, and movement, while ensuring the women are not routinely objectified, but instead portrayed with agency and depth.
At its core, this musical is a coming of age tale; warm, messy, funny, and unexpectedly moving. It reminds us that even the most extraordinary true stories are shaped by flawed relationships, human longing, and the people who lift us up or let us fall. By the end of the show I hope everyone will be smiling, shaking their heads, and thinking, I can’t believe this is a true story (possibly with less dancing).
